File # 2023-2861

A search for a break and enter suspect ended peacefully when residents in a Cedar neighbourhood cornered the suspect in a carport with garden tools to prevent the suspect from him fleeing before police could arrive. The suspect was located at approximately 6 PM on January 25, 2023, in the 1700 block of Woobank Road.

Numerous officers responded to 911 calls around 3 PM when a homeowner in the 2400 block of Yellow Point Road reported coming face to face with an intruder in his home. A struggle ensued during which time the suspect sustained a head injury, and lost a significant amount of blood. The suspect, although injured, managed to flee. Officers and Police Dog Services searched the area but with no success.

Just before 6 PM more 911 calls. Neighbours in the 1700 block of Woobank Road, some 2 kms away, were reporting that a man with dried blood on him, had tried to break into a residence. This time, several neighbours came together and brandishing a variety of garden tools, prevented the individual fom fleeing. Officers responded and arrested the suspect for the two attempted break and enters.

The suspect, age 34, was transported to the Nanaimo hospital and treated for his injuries. After being medically cleared he was transported to the Nanaimo RCMP detachment where he was held overnight.

The suspect, who is of no fixed address, was also subject of 4 outstanding warrants from North Cowichan. No charges have been laid in connection with the two attempted break and enters and it remains under investigation.

We are pleased that the suspect was eventually located and that none of the home owners were injured while trying to subdue him, said R/Constable Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP.
