File # 2022-35876

The Nanaimo RCMP is investigating an incident in which a pedestrian was struck and seriously injured by a motor vehicle while walking through a marked crosswalk. The incident occurred at approximately 8:30 PM on Sunday October 9, 2022, on Highway 19A at a crosswalk that leads to the Terminal Park Mall.

Police, EHS and Fire attended. The victim, age 25, was transported to the Nanaimo hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries. While only preliminary, police believe that based on witness evidence and dash cam video, the victim and her friend, were walking through the marked crosswalk when the woman was struck by a northbound vehicle. The vehicle involved, a newer model SUV, was driven by a woman in her late 20’s who remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.

Police were able to rule out alcohol as a contributing factor, however, at this time, distracted driving cannot be ruled out. Southbound lanes were closed for several hours while the scene was examined. The vehicle involved was towed from the scene and will undergo a mechanical inspection.

The investigation is continuing.
