First Nations Policing

First Nations Community Policing (FNCP) mandate is public safety and safe / healthy Aboriginal Communities. The FNCP program is designed to build trust and lasting relationships between the Aboriginal Communities and the RCMP. The FNCP program enables the RCMP to be accountable through responsive, effective and culturally competent policing services. The service delivery of the program is based on relationships, accountability, culturally competent organization and crime reduction. Response to the community needs will be through a balanced approach of prevention and enforcement. The members within the program will be expected to have the skills and knowledge to recognize and pay tribute to Aboriginal values and traditions.

The Williams Lake RCMP Detachment currently has four FNCP members under the Community Tripartite Agreement (CTA) and Letters Of Expectations (LOE). The CTA's involve six First Nations Communities within the Williams Lake RCMP Detachment area. Under these agreements, the FNCP members spend their time within the First Nations Communities developing trusting and lasting relationships for a better future. The LOE's are letters of agreements between the Williams Lake RCMP Detachment and the First Nations Communities to address concerns, safety issues and problems within their communities.

Recruiting

Aboriginal recruiters are travelling throughout BC to talk to future police officers about opportunities with the RCMP. Seminars, talks and career fairs are among the many ways new recruits are hearing first hand about making a difference as members of the RCMP.

The Aboriginal Pre-Cadet Training Program

This program offers Aboriginal people in B.C. the opportunity to work as sworn peace officers with the RCMP. Aboriginal people from the ages of 19 -29, undergo 3 weeks of training at the RCMP Training Academy (Depot) in Regina. The training focuses on teaching collaborative problem-solving skills, law enforcement, public speaking, cultural diversity and facilitating Safe Community Workshops in communities. There are also elements of physical fitness and drill which promotes team work and provide students with long-term strategies to meet personal fitness goals.

This is a program that the Williams Lake Detachment endorses and is certainly always willing to work with communities in our Detachment area to implement this program.
