Speeding
Collisions involving speed is one of the leading causes of fatalities on B.C. roads. You can prevent or reduce the effects of vehicle impact by maintaining a safe driving speed. It is common sense advice – but just slowing down could save your life, or someone else’s. Also by allowing a greater distance between yourself and other vehicles, you have more time to react should you need to stop suddenly.
Posted speed limits on B.C. roadways are maximum speeds during ideal conditions (dry roads, clear visibility). Vehicle type, condition and whether or not you are towing anything can also affect the speed at which you should travel. Know your vehicle limitations as well and always think safety first.
Excessive Speeding
Excessive speeding is defined in the Motor Vehicle Act as driving at a speed greater than 40 km/h over the speed limit. Drivers who exceed the speed limit are putting the lives of all those who share the roads at extreme risk.
Those who are caught for excessive speeding face significant fines of up to $483, plus all the costs associated with a seven day vehicle impoundment. The length of the vehicle impoundment increases for subsequent offences.
Or police may proceed by way of Criminal Code charge.
