File # 2021-575
I am Superintendent Dave Chauhan, Officer-In-Charge of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team. I am pleased to announce that charges have been laid in connection with this past Saturday evening’s fatal shooting here in Burnaby. I will now provide you with a short summary of the investigation so far.
On May 8, 2021 at 7 p.m., 19-year-old Blerton Dalipi walked out of a business in the 7700-block of 6th Street in Burnaby. Soon after, a gunman approached Dalipi and shot him multiple times. He died later in hospital.
Thanks to the quick response of police and assistance of residents in the area, a suspect later identified as 20-year-old Ahmed Tahir was arrested in connection with Dalipi’s shooting. Later that evening, a second man arrived in hospital with a gunshot wound. Investigators determined that he was in the same immediate area as our victim at the time of the shooting. He has no association with Dalipi. His injuries are non-life-threatening and we wish him a full and speedy recovery.
Yesterday, Ahmed Tahir was charged with first-degree murder in the death of Blerton Dalipi. Similar to other recent acts of violence in the region, this was a brazen daylight shooting and upsetting for the community. We share the same concerns and are committed to solving each and every case.
