Kitimat RCMP weekly report February 8th - February 14th, 2024

Illegal quadding:

The Kitimat RCMP received a traffic compliant during the afternoon hours of February 8th. It was reported that a quad was driving on the street and side walk paths in a Whitesail neighbourhood. Patrols were conducted; however, the quad was not located. The Kitimat RCMP would like to remind off road vehicle users that they can face extensive motor vehicle act fines and have their vehicle impounded if found using them illegally. Ensure you understand all local and provincial laws. (2024-467)

Single vehicle collision:

A report of a single vehicle collision during the afternoon commute was received by the Kitimat RCMP on February 9th. It was reported that a vehicle had gone off road right while travelling north on Highway 37, and rolled onto its side. The investigating officer located the vehicle and found the driver had been provided a ride to a local hospital by a witness to the collision. The driver reported they had received minimal injuries from the incident. (2024-478)

2nd Single vehicle collision in 2 days:

During the morning commute on February 10th, the Kitimat RCMP were called to a second single vehicle collision on Highway 37, this time near the Kitimat River bridge. The Kitimat RCMP officers attended and located a single vehicle off the road with two occupants. The vehicle was damaged however there was no injuries reported. the Kitimat RCMP would like to remind drivers that the weather and road conditions can change very quickly on our roadways and you need to always be prepared to adjust accordingly. 911 Hang-up:

On February 11th, the Kitimat RCMP received a report of a 911 hang up call. The investigating officer was able to contact the caller and it was found that it was an accidental call. As a reminder, if you accidently call 911, please stay on the call and talk with the 911 operators. Simply advise it was an accidental call and provide your information as requested. If you hang up, no matter how quickly after you call, a file will need to be made, using resources to contact you that could have been saved if you just waited on the phone for a few more minutes. 3 vehicles, a fence and a building collision:

While walking out to a police vehicle on February 12th, a Kitimat RCMP officer witnessed a collision on Lahakas Blvd South in front of the RCMP detachment. A vehicle failed to stop at a stop sign, resulting in it being struck by another vehicle travelling on Lahakas Blvd South. The struck vehicle then rolled into a fence and struck a parked car which was pushed sideways into a building. Luckily the injuries received were minor and damages to the building appeared to be minimal as well. (2024-510)

Roses for Valentines day:

The Kitimat RCMP would like to thank the Kitimat Winterhawks U15 Rep team players for attending the detachment on February 14th to deliver Roses for the entire staff. The roses were purchased by a local citizen, in memory of her father, who was a cell guard here at the detachment for many years.

Guns N Hoses hockey game:

The annual Guns n Hoses hockey game was held on February 10th at the Tamitik Arena. The game is organized by KidSport Kitimat, Kitimat RCMP and Kitimat Fire and Rescue. The guns players were made up of RCMP, Conservation and Department of Fisheries officers as well as civilians that were given special agent status for the evening. Team Hoses was firefighters from Kitimat and surrounding communities. The opening ceremonies included a moment of silence for members of the emergency services family that lost their lives over the past year and the singing of the national anthem by RCMP Constable Jenny Muckle donning her iconic Red Serge uniform. The team mascots, Sparky and Safety bear, then had a skating race around the arena. The youthful legs of Sparky proved to be to much for Safety Bear, who had just woken up from hibernation for this game and seemed to be a bit slower to get going. The game was very spirited with the guns pulling out a 7-4 victory. This is only the second game since COVID and the Hoses had last years win, so the series is now tied 1-1. Kidsport Kitimat will be releasing the results of the fundraising at a future date. The Kitimat RCMP would like to thank the organizers, all the sponsors and businesses for making this such a special event. Of course, this event would not have been nearly as successful without the donations from all the spectators that came out to enjoy the game and evenings events.
