Kitimat RCMP weekly report December 25, 2023 to January 4, 2024

Facebook

On December 26, 2023 at 1106 hours, the Kitimat RCMP received a report advising an unknown person was using their residential address in Kitimat, BC for a pickup location for a Facebook Marketplace sale. Police spoke with the complainant who stated that an unknown female stopped by their residence advising someone on Facebook Marketplace stated that address was the location for the exchange. The complainant did not have anything for sale on Marketplace. (2023-4865)

Turkey theft

On December 26 2023 Kitimat RCMP received a report of turkey theft from a residence. The complainant told police there were footprints in the gravel beside the home. Police attended the residence but by that time, the complainant had located the missing turkey. A family member had put the turkey and pan in the BBQ in the garage out of fear of a grizzly bear coming into the garage. (2023-4866)

Bar checks

Between December 26 2023 and January 3 2024 police continued their licensed (liquor) premise checks at the local establishments. Police were pleased to note no infractions and observed people imbibing responsibly.

Residential alarm

On December 28 2023 the Kitimat RCMP responded to a residential alarm. Police attended the location and found a person located inside who was house sitting for family. The person improperly input the alarm code which set the alarm off. No safety concerns present. Alarm deemed to be false. (2023-4889)

Facebook scams

On December 29 2023 Kitimat RCMP received a report of fraud on Facebook. The complainant reported they lost $500 to a Facebook scam. According to the report, someone sent them a message saying they won 1 Million USD and a F350 but they had to send them $500 in admin fees. They had to send them via apple gift card and provide their bank information to receive the deposit. Unfortunately, the complainant did provide their bank information, password and copies of their identification. Police provided direction on how to contact Equifax and TransUnion to assist in identity protection as well as the number for the Canadian Anti Fraud Centre. Police strongly encourage social media users to be aware of potential scams and not to provide personal information. (2023-4892)

Single vehicle incident

On January 3 2024 Kitimat RCMP received a report of a single vehicle collision near on Highway 37. Police attended. The driver was the sole occupant of the vehicle. It appears the driver was not able to negotiate the curve. Roadside test conducted and indicated no impairment of the driver by drugs or alcohol. Driver sustained minor injuries and was transported to a local area hospital by ambulance. Vehicle was not drivable. (2024-34)

School speed zone enforcement

Kitimat RCMP are reminding motorists that school is back in after the holiday. Police are out enforcing school zone speed limits and ensuring proper stopping at all stop signs. Please ensure that all drivers are following road safety rules. Pedestrians are encouraged to remain visible to vehicular traffic. Best practices include; crossing streets at crosswalks or intersections, walking on sidewalks when available, and if there is not a sidewalk – walk facing traffic and as far from traffic as possible.

Found property in ambulance

January 3, 2024 at 1533 hours, Kitimat RCMP received a cell phone dropped off at the detachment. The cell phone was left in a Kitimat ambulance December 27, 2023. If this cell phone belongs to you, please contact the detachment to identify and arrange for pick up. (2024-48)
