The Port Alberni RCMP is dedicated to ensuring these crimes are investigated to the fullest extent, and ensuring the safety of the public, stated Constable Richard Johns. No resource was left idle, as our Major Crimes Unit has taken conduct of the investigation with the assistance of all available local supports.

After a complete and thorough investigation, on August 18, 2023 44-year-old Jonathan Womacks was charged with Aggravated Assault, unfortunately three days later the victim died due to their injuries.

On September 1, 2023 The BC Prosecution Service upgraded the charge to Second Degree Murder against Mr. Womacks, who remains in custody for a later court date.
