Assault with a weapon inside Montrose residence
File # 2022-5896

On Wednesday, December 28, 2022, at 8:37 p.m. frontline Trail and Greater District RCMP officers responded to an alleged assault with a weapon that occurred between a 38-year-old man and a 35-year-old woman at a residence in the 700 block of 11th Avenue, in Montrose, BC. Officers believed what began as a verbal argument escalated into the man choking the woman and using a knife to cut her abdomen. The man also suffered what appeared to be serious self-inflicted knife wounds to his leg and arm that required medical treatment.

An officer arrested the man for Assault with a Weapon contrary to Section 267 of the Criminal Code. Officers took the man into custody and lodged him into the cellblock at the Trail Detachment. He later appeared via telephone before a judge and released from custody on conditions.

The 38-year-old Montrose man will make his first appearance on January 12, 2023, in Provincial Court, in Rossland, BC.

You can call it puppy love
File # 2022-5924

On Friday, December 30, 2022, at 3:35 p.m. a frontline Trail and Greater District RCMP officer received a report about a 64-year-old Trail woman who fell victim for a second time to an online puppy scam fraud in just a matter of months, in Trail, BC. The woman had sent $1000 electronically to a website address as per the request of the puppy seller who promised to deliver her a puppy afterwards. The woman realized that she was the victim of another fraud when she did not receive her promised puppy.

The monetary funds sent were in the form of gift cards and are not recoverable.

I would like to remind everyone in the new year that you cannot recover money sent to someone electronically. Once sent, consider it gone for good. To avoid falling victim of a puppy scam, please consider contacting local, well-known, reputable dog breeders, adopting a pet from your local SPCA, and exchanging money when you physically receive the puppy in person. – Sgt. Lost skier found in the backcountry
File # 2022-5944

On Thursday, December 29, 2022, at 4:40 p.m. a frontline Trail and Greater District RCMP officer received a report that a 20-year-old Thunder Bay man went missing while skiing while out-of-bounds at the Red Mountain Resort, in Rossland, BC. His parents reported him missing to the Red Mountain Ski Patrol when he failed to return skiing at the end of the day. Ski patrol notified the RCMP and SAR who began assisting in the search.

Search teams were able to locate the missing man’s last known whereabouts on Gray Mountain by tracking his cell phone and air tag, and using the information obtained from the electronic ski gate records. The search for the man was paused around 1:00 a.m. due to darkness. It was resumed again in the early morning hours.

Rescuers located the man in the morning walking down the road around the 13-kilometre mark on Rossland-Cascade Highway, in Rossland. The man said he had made a shelter overnight before attempting to walk to safety. The man was not injured and returned to his parents.

I would like to thank Red Mountain Resort and Rossland, Castlegar and South Columbia Search and Rescue for their quick and professional responses. Please stay within marked boundaries and designated trails when you are skiing on any mountain resort. Skiing out-of-bounds and in the backcountry is ill-advised for the solo person who is unprepared and untrained. I would like to remind the public that hundreds of people are lost and injured in the backcountry Canada-wide every year. This number can be much lower with if you take precautions before deciding to go off-trail. It is the up to the individual to make sure that they are prepared before stepping foot into the challenging backcountry terrain.

Anyone travelling in the backcountry should complete a basic Avalanche Skills Training Level One and carry the proper backcountry safety gear. For more information on backcountry safety and information on local training courses, please visit:
