Kitimat RCMP weekly report August 18 - 24, 2022

Check stop

On August 18th at 9:15 pm three officers conducted a check stop on Highway 37 near Forest Ave. Approximately 70 vehicles were checked for driver sobriety, drivers licence and vehicle insurance. No violations were observed on this occasion.

Breach of release order

On August 19th at 7:15 pm the Kitimat RCMP received a complaint of a breach of no contact order. Police attended to the complainant’s address and a male was arrested for failing to comply with release order and 3 warrants for failing to attend court. The male was transported to Kitimat RCMP cells for a bail hearing.

Head light out – Impaired driver

On August 20th an officer observed a head light not working on a truck and conducted a vehicle stop. The driver denied consuming any alcohol and a mandatory approved screening device demand was read. The driver blew a warn on two devices. The driver was issued a 7-day driving prohibition and the vehicle was impounded.

Sexual image extortion

On August 21st an officer with the Kitimat RCMP responded to a complaint of a sexual image extortion. A male had met who he believed was a female online and engaged in a sexual act. The female then demanded money from the male and threatened to distribute a sexual image of him if he did not transfer a certain amount of money. The case remains under investigation. The Kitimat RCMP warn of the public to protect themselves by; Recognizing that live streaming can be recorded and that pre-recorded videos can be livestreamed, familiarizing yourself with social media privacy settings and consider limiting who has access to your personal information (i.e., friends’ list, location), do not share intimate images or videos as once you share you don’t have control over what someone else does with it, unless you know the person offline, there is no way to confirm who is on the other end and trust your instincts, be skeptical and cautious.

Stunt driving

On August 22nd at 8:30 pm an officer in an unmarked vehicle observed a vehicle turn onto Nalabila Blvd and squeal its tires. The officer followed the vehicle come to a complete stop on Nalabila Ave and Haisla Blvd. The driver squealed the vehicles tire for 10 seconds while turning left onto Haisla Blvd. A vehicle stop was conducted and the driver was identified as a novice drivers licence and had 3 passengers in the vehicle. The vehicle was impounded to 7 days and the drivers was issued a violation ticket.

Bear call

On August 23rd at 10:10 pm the Kitimat RCMP were asked to assist the Conservation Officer Service with a report of a bear on Swan St. The Kitimat RCMP attended and the property representative stated that a bear did get into her house earlier and two bears had just returned to the area. The property representative stated that her dog had scared the bear away this time. The bear was gone on arrival of the Kitimat RCMP.

Impaired on Highway 37

On August 24th at approximately 1200 pm the Kitimat RCMP were alerted to a possible impaired driver traveling from Terrace to Kitimat on Highway 37. Two Kitimat RCMP officers attended to Highway 37 and located the vehicle and conducted a vehicle stop. The driver displayed signs of impairments and an approved screening device demand was read to the driver. The driver refused to provide a breath sample. Open liquor was observed in the vehicle. The driver was issued a violation ticket, 90-day driving prohibition and 30-day vehicle impound.

Kitimat RCMP
