At approximately 12:31 am on April 12, 2022, Elk Valley RCMP responded to a report of a Telus worker had been injured while raising utility lines for a very large load being hauled to a local coal mine and along Crowsnest Highway 3 and just west of the BC-Alberta border.

The Telus worker fell approximately thirty feet to the ground. He was transported by ambulance to the emergency room at the Crowsnest Pass Health Centre in Blairmore, Alberta where he succumbed to his injuries. It was determined that an electrocution may have played a role in the fall.

Elk Valley RCMP investigators have assumed conduct as the lead investigative agency, as is the protocol in any workplace fatality. Numerous agencies and businesses are involved or notified such as various utility service providers, the Labour Program of Employment and Social Development Canada, WorksafeBC, and Alberta’s Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

As this is an ongoing investigation, no further details will be provided.

This is an unfortunate event that will affect many people. Our thoughts are with the victim’s family, says Cst. Debra Katerenchuk of the Elk Valley RCMP.
