Dossier nº 2100: 2021-5511
On Saturday, November 13, 2021 a BC Highway Patrol officer made a stop at a local convenience store in Salmon Arm to purchase a snack. The ever-vigilant officer observed a man exit a parked vehicle and enter the store. The officer queried the licence plates of the car the man exited and found they had been reported stolen two weeks earlier in Vernon.
The officer scanned the interior of the vehicle before entering the store to speak with its driver and saw a baseball bat in the passenger foot well. After requesting back-up, the officer went into the store, located the driver at the counter and arrested him for possession of stolen property and secured him in the police car.
A search of the vehicle subsequent to the arrest yielded, in addition to the baseball bat, a pistol-grip shotgun, what appeared to be a handgun, a collapsible baton, shotgun ammunition and suspected narcotics. The vehicle was impounded and the driver, a man in his thirties from the North Okanagan area, was transported to Salmon Arm Detachment cells.
The officer continued his investigation and found that the driver was under a six-year driving prohibition, was in breach of a probation order not to possess weapons and is well-known to police. The man appeared in Court and was remanded to custody.
Incidents like this are becoming an all-too common occurrence, says Corporal Mike Wasylenki, Unit Commander of BCHP in Revelstoke.
The officer in this case is, by habit, very vigilant and the results of his investigation demonstrate how BC Highway Patrol is contributing to making our highways safer together.
