On June 12, 2021, a group of approximately 50 protesters blocked Columbia Avenue in Castlegar shutting down both lanes of traffic in front of the Castlegar RCMP and City Hall. For 24 hours, demonstrators used people, vehicles, an RV, and other items to disrupt traffic.
The demonstrators included adults, teenagers and small children, who were protesting logging practices throughout British Columbia. The Castlegar RCMP, emergency services, and the City of Castlegar were aware of the planned protest prior to the event occurring.
The primary concern of police was public safety, police officer safety, and the preservation of the right to peaceful, lawful and safe protest,
said Sgt. Monty Taylor, Detachment Commander of the Castlegar RCMP.
The group was not permitted to obstruct Columbia Avenue nor was a proper event permit requested or issued through the City of Castlegar. Traffic was re-directed safely around the demonstrators while RCMP participated in ongoing discussions with a group-appointed police liaison.
A 51-year-old Nelson resident, who is believed to be an organizer to the event, was issued a violation ticket for a Motor Vehicle Act-related offence. At approximately 3:00 pm on Sunday, June 13th, the demonstrators left and the roadway was re-opened.
