File # 2025-139
On Sunday, March 9th, 2025 at 10:53 a.m, The Outer Gulf Island RCMP received a report of a partially submerged vehicle in Miners Bay, Mayne Island. RCMP, Mayne Island Fire Rescue and BC Ambulance responded.
When first responders arrived on scene, the vehicle was observed upside down in the tidal zone of Miners Bay. The driver and lone occupant was located deceased inside the vehicle.
Initial investigation found the vehicle had been driving westbound on Fernhill Rd when it collided with a concrete barrier at the intersection of Georgina Point rd. After colliding with the barrier, the vehicle struck the north railing of the pier, tumbled over the cliff onto the low tide zone adjacent to the Miners Bay public wharf. Speed is believed to be a contributing factor.
"This is a tragic incident which ended the life of a local Mayne Island resident." stated acting Detachment Commander Cst. Marcel Taekema. "Our condolences go out to the family and friends of this individual."
The Outer Gulf Islands RCMP are asking those with information which could be related to this incident to please call the RCMP Detachment at 250-629-6171. The collision remains under investigation by both the RCMP and the B.C Coroners service.
