A river boat trip ends tragically

On Sunday, September 29, 2024, Chetwynd RCMP received a report of a missing person following a river boat incident on the Pine River, west of Chetwynd.

Police immediately responded to the scene where they learned that an adult man, and a child were on the shore when they noticed the river boat floating away down river. The man jumped into the river to retrieve the boat and was seen go under the surface.

A Dawson Creek Search and Rescue member was already on scene and the young child was safe and unharmed. Fort St. John Search and Rescue were called to assist in the search for the missing man. Sadly, the man was located on shore downstream from the boat launch deceased.

Chetwynd RCMP thank the Dawson Creek Search & Rescue, Fort St John Search & Rescue as well as EHS, PDS and Victim Services for their assistance.

BC Coroners Service has carriage of the investigation and the RCMP will not be releasing any further information.
