Beware of all the ghosts and ghouls this Halloween!
With Halloween fast approaching, Sea to Sky RCMP (Squamish) are reminding everyone to stay safe, and in good spirits as youngsters take to the streets in search of the best tricks and treats around!
Whether you are planning to collect treats in your local area, or headed to a party, here are some tips to keep you and your children safe for the evening.
Parents/guardians:
- Plan ahead to make sure your child’s costume is visible in the dark. Bright colors, flashlights, and reflective take are good options to be seen in the dark night.
- If your child plans to wear a mask, test it out, and make sure they can still see in all directions. Using face paint is a good alternative to ensure vision isn’t blocked.
- If your child is trick or treating without an adult, make sure they have a buddy or two to go with.
- Work with your child to help them create a route and a curfew. Try to include landmarks (business or safe locations) in the route, as this can help protect the child from getting lost.
- Do a traffic safety refresher before the kids head out. With the excitement of Halloween, it is easy to forget looking both ways, or staying on sidewalks.
Trick-or-Treaters
- Go to well known areas with an adult, or friends.
- Stay in well lit areas, and visit well-lit houses.
- Watch for cars pulling out of driveways.
- Have your treats inspected by an adult before eating them.
- Be careful around animals you don’t know, Pets can get frightened with the costumes, scary music, and loud noises on Halloween. Some are ‘Scare-dy cats’!
Motorists:
- Avoid driving in residential areas if possible. If you must drive in the areas, ensure to take your time, and lookout for trick-or-treaters.
- As always, wear a seat belt, drive sober, put the phone away, and stay focused on the road ahead.
