The BC RCMP has notified the Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO BC) of an incident in Comox Valley where one man was injured.

On October 5, 2022 Comox Valley RCMP received a report of a stolen vehicle. An officer located the vehicle in a parking lot in the 700 block of Ryan Road and when the driver began to leave the officer attempted to block the vehicle. The driver then reportedly drove into the marked police vehicle before leaving the scene. A search for the suspect and vehicle was initiated, including the use of the RCMP Air Services helicopter.

The vehicle was later located in a residential area approximately 1 km away and a second un-marked police vehicle was struck.

The vehicle was then spotted in a cul de sac on Prestwick Place, and police attempted to set up a spike belt. The vehicle allegedly attempted to drive past them, lost control and rolled.

The driver was transported to hospital by Emergency Health Services where it was determined that he had suffered non-life threatening injuries. No other individuals or police officers required medical treatment.

The IIO BC has been notified and is investigating the actions of police.

Comox Valley RCMP is conducting the concurrent investigation into the original report of a stolen vehicle, and actions of the driver. Anyone with information is asked to call 250-338-1321.

Please note that all aspects and circumstances of this incident will be the subject of independent investigation by the IIO BC. For more information about the IIO BC and media updates, you can visit its website at www.iiobc.ca .
