Cops for Kids Riders Nick Reiman and Kathryn Ahvenus

A group of riders from the North Okanagan are once again tackling the Cops for Kids Ride across South Eastern BC to raise funds and awareness for children facing illness, disability, or traumatic crisis. Representing the area are Cst. Nick Reimann, Cst. Jonathan Klassen, Cpl. James Moore and dispatcher Kathryn Ahvenus.

The four riders are amongst 28 others who have been training on their own time, volunteering at community events, and fundraising a minimum of $2,500 in order to be selected for the team. The group left Kelowna on Friday, and are currently making their way through the South Okanagan, over to the Kootenays as far east as Cranbrook, before returning back through Vernon on Saturday September 17th on the ninth day of their ten day journey.

During the ten days, the team will stop in communities across the province at community events organized to meet with the children who benefit from the fundraising efforts, and for the public to meet with these riders who have dedicated to much in order to pedal for the local kids. In Vernon, the team will arrive to the RCMP detachment on Saturday September 17th at 3pm to a gathering of supporters. Members of the community are encouraged to come out to meet the team.

Returning rider James Moore is honoured to represent the RCMP and to help the children in our community. We’ve all been training and fundraising all year in preparation for this journey. To complete this tremendous feat with my colleagues who also chose a life of assisting others is a real honour, he smiles. Law enforcement doesn’t always provide us with the positive interactions with members of the public, but our supporters on this ride have been tremendous. We’ve met the nicest folks who wave when they see us cycling, or provide a donation to help the kids, it’s been heartwarming to see, he adds.

Since 2001, Cops for Kids have raised over $6.1 million in support of local children in medical, physical, or traumatic crisis. To follow the team on their journey, or to make a donation please visit the website at www.copsforkids.org or follow along on Facebook and Instagram.
