File # 2022-5226

On August 18, 2022, at about 5:30 p.m., police responded to a report of a man randomly bear spraying another man then leaving the scene on a black bike near Loggers Lane and Finch Dr.

When the first responding officer got to the scene and arrested the man, the man bear sprayed the officer in the face then tried to leave the scene again by bike. Second and third officers arrived to help finish the arrest as the man tried to fight and spray all three of them.

The man has since been charged under the Criminal Code for assault peace officer with a weapon and obstruct a peace officer. Police released him from custody with a court date in near future. He received minor injuries and did not wish treatment offered by police and medical staff. The officer who was bear sprayed received treatment at scene from paramedics.

This was very disturbing and there were both adults and kids gathering to see what was happening, says Corporal Angela Kermer of the Sea to Sky RCMP. We’re relieved people were not seriously hurt, and thankful for community concern about the man and police officers.

Police follow up includes continuing to try and identify the first man who was bear sprayed so they know he is okay, and identify other witnesses who saw and captured what happened on devices or dash cameras. Police will not be releasing the name of the man charged.

Squamish RCMP asks anyone with any information regarding the above file to contact the local detachment at 604-892-6100, or, contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS, or go to www.solvecrime.ca
