File # PSA - Onlne Crime Reporting Tool
Did you know the BC RCMP receives over 1 million calls for service a year? That is nearly half the total received by the RCMP across the country!
Residents and business owners, with a valid email address, are able to use the online crime reporting tool to report less serious crimes that occur in our community where there is no suspect or witness and follow up by a police officer is not required. They will receive file numbers immediately for their record and submissions for insurance claims.
The Fort St John RCMP initially announced the launch the new online crime reporting tool back in May of 2020. Since then the Fort St John RCMP online crime reporting tool has been used to report 22 files in 2020, 14 in 2021 and 16 so far in 2022.
Citizens are able to report the following crimes online:
- Damage/mischief to property under $5,000
- Damage/mischief to a vehicle under $5,000
- Hit and run to an unoccupied vehicle or property
- Theft of bicycle under $5,000
- Theft under $5,000
- Theft from vehicle under $5,000
- Lost property
- A driving complaint that is NOT in progress (general poor driving behaviour that includes speeding, distracted driving, or failing to follow road signs or signals).
In order to ensure that only less serious incidents are reported on the online crime reporting tool, incidents must also satisfy the following conditions:
- No witnesses or suspects.
- Item(s) lost or stolen must cost less than $5,000.
- Vandalized property or vehicle will cost less than $5,000 to repair.
- There are no items involving personal identity, firearms, licence plates or decals.
- Follow-up by a police officer must not be required.
The online crime reporting tool will NOT be able to create a file if:
- you have a witness to or suspect for the crime you are reporting
- lost or stolen item(s) involves personal identity or firearms
The online crime reporting tool gives residents of the North Peace an alternative format to report less serious crimes, feeing up frontline officers to focus on more serious calls, potentially improving overall response times and safety throughout the North Peace
