Be Prepared and Be Aware for the Outdoors
Trail and Greater District

As summer finally arrives in the West Kootenay, Trail and Greater District RCMP is beginning to receive calls to locate people who have failed to check-in with their contacts. Trail RCMP is having to searched for people who are unable to check-in due to lack of cell service, and not missing as reported.
Trail RCMP ask the public to be prepared for a safe and fun outdoor season by following these tips:
- Plan your trip and itinerary well ahead of time .
- Check in before you leave the cell service area. Cell service often drops off rapidly once you leave population centres.
- Be prepared for all types of weather and conditions.
- Carry a satellite communication device as much of the Kootenay area is without cell service.
- A satellite device with a personal locator beacon is highly recommended as well as a subscription to activate it.
- Stay within your area of competence and ability if you are hiking, biking, swimming, boating, etc.. Know your limits!
- Do not operate any type of motor craft while under the influence of drugs and alcohol. Police will be conducting impaired driving enforcement all summer long.
- Follow the
Leave No Trace
principal every time you venture into the wilderness. Pack out all of your garbage, waste, and recycling. - Have an emergency kit ready and accessible at all times. You can consider including:
- Food and water for 24 hours for each member of your party
- Blankets
- Candles
- A first aid kit
- A fire starter kit
- Bear spray, bear bangers, and noise makers to help prepare for possible animal encounters
- Paper maps and guide books
- Secure your food from animals at all times.
- Be considerate of other people using the area. Everyone is here to enjoy the area so be a good neighbour!
- Share your experiences with others so they can benefit from your experiences!
