BC RCMP notify IIO BC of incident in Barriere

The BC RCMP has notified the Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO BC) of an incident in Barriere in which one man has been injured.

Just before 10 p.m. on May 20, 2022 frontline officers from the Barriere RCMP were called to the 2900-block of Highway 5 for a report that a man had been dropped off on the side of the road and picked up what appeared to be a weapon.

Officers deployed to the area and located the man. An interaction occurred between the man and officers and shots were fired by police. The man was shot and injured. The officers were not injured.

Officers began first aid until BC Emergency Health Services arrived to transport the man to a local area hospital.

The IIO BC has been notified and will be investigating police actions in this incident. While the Southeast District General Investigation Section is a conducting a concurrent criminal code investigation. As the matter is now under investigation by the IIO BC, no further information will be released by police.
