File # PSA - Have a safe May long weekend
May long weekend is here and many are out and about kicking off to summer season!
The Fort St John RCMP wants to take this opportunity to remind motorists to slow down and to drive sober this weekend.
In preparation for increased summer road traffic, police across the province will be out and about patrolling the roads and enforcing the laws in efforts to keep the driving public safe. Police will be focusing on ensuring drivers are sober and alert, and that seatbelts are being used as most traffic related injuries and death are preventable.
According to ICBC, on average, British Columbians are involved in 1900 collisions with 480 people sustaining injuries and two people being killed each May long weekend.
On average the North Central region of BC experiences 120 crashes with 20 people being injured.
Driving is a privilege and nobody goes out thinking they are not going to return home or get injured while travelling
, said Constable Chad Neustaeter. Do everything you can to help keep the roads safe for everyone.
Quick tips to make this a safe May long weekend for you and your family:
- Plan your travels ahead of time so you are not rushed or in a hurry.
- Drive at the posted speed limits and help drivers get back into the lane when they pass you.
- Remain focused and avoid distraction while driving especially if you have passengers (precious cargo) in your vehicle.
- Ensure everyone is wearing their seatbelt and child car seats are secured properly.
- Leave the phone alone, stay focused on the road.
- Only drive sober! Call for a taxi or sober friend or family member to pick you up if you have had anything to drink.
Enjoy your weekend and drive safe.
