File # 2022-360

On February 28th at 2:30pm Lillooet RCMP received a report of a rockslide on Hwy 40. The complainant also reported finding a commercial vehicle nearby with a deceased driver inside. The vehicle had come to a stop against the rock face.

Lillooet RCMP and BC Ambulance attended and confirmed one male driver had died. Initial investigations led police to believe the cause of death appeared to be from a rockslide that struck the cab of the vehicle.

Due to further rockslide concerns, Hwy 40 was closed to all westbound traffic near Yalakom Rd, at the Yalakom River crossing. Eastbound traffic was closed at Mission Mountain Rd and Hwy 40. The highway was re-opened on March 1, 2022 after the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure completed their safety assessment.

Lillooet RCMP send their condolences to the family and friends of the driver. This was an extremely tragic incident, stated Constable Andrew Hodges of the Lillooet RCMP.

While the man's next-of-kin have been notified, the name of the man is not being released. The investigation has been turned over the BC Coroner.
