Vanderhoof RCMP are warning local residents of ongoing scams in which victims are purchasing gift cards, crypto currency, bitcoin, and other electronic payment methods and sending them to unknown individuals.
The scammers are offering,
get rich quick schemes and guaranteeing the victims that they will receive money and or other forms of compensation for sending them the requested payments.
The scammers are quickly becoming more sophisticated with recent victims disclosing sensitive personal information including social insurance, drivers license numbers, personal photographs and recording statements requested by the scammers.
If you receive a phone call from an unknown individual asking for money and or sensitive personal information, do not provide it to them and simply hang up. You can block the number to prevent the scammers calling back, and if in doubt contact your local RCMP detachment.
The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre collects information on fraud and identity theft. They provide information on past and current scams affecting Canadians. If you think you are a victim of fraud, report it!
