File # #2022-137

In the early morning hours of January 8, Salmon Arm RCMP received a call from the local fire department regarding a residence on fire on Second Nations Road where two people had been able to successfully escape from the building. Upon arrival, a Salmon Arm RCMP officer tracked a set of footprints in the fresh snow and followed into the thick bush behind the residence for 2 kilometers. The officer located an unconscious man lying in the snow.

The Salmon Arm RCMP officer observed the man in distress and immediately started CPR. A second officer from the Kelowna Police Dog Section also made his way back down to the road to help Search and Rescue find their way to the unconscious man. The Salmon Arm officer stayed with the man and performed CPR for one hour until Salmon Arm Search and Rescue were able to attend their location. The man was taken to a waiting ambulance and then airlifted to a nearby Kelowna area hospital. Police have since identified the suspect and at last report, he remains in intensive care.

"The quick actions of the Salmon Arm members and the help from the Kelowna Police Dog Services member, and Salmon Arm Search and Rescue averted tragedy," says Cpl. Luiz Sardinha of the Salmon Arm RCMP.
