Two stolen trucks destroyed in separate incidents

Elk Valley

On Tuesday, December 21, 2021, shortly after 4:00 a.m., Elk Valley RCMP received a report from CP Rail after a freight train collided with a pick-up truck on a railway crossing near Galloway.

Frontline officers from Elk Valley and Cranbrook detachments responded and through investigation determined the truck was unoccupied at the time of the crash and had been reported stolen out of Alberta.

A short time later, an Elk Valley RCMP officer saw a black Dodge Ram driving dangerously in Fernie. It was quickly determined that this truck had been reported stolen in Cranbrook.

At approximately 6:30am the same pickup was seen on the Dogwood Trail stuck in the snow. There was an unsuccessful attempt to free the vehicle from the snow. The truck was then observed to be on fire and the police were called. Within minutes, police located two people walking away from the scene.

Police believe the suspects, an adult man and woman, were searching through unlocked trucks in the area, possibly looking for vehicle keys, as police feel the two stolen trucks are related.

Both suspects are known to various police agencies in southern Alberta. The investigation is on going and the suspects could face multiple criminal code charges.

Police would like to remind the public to keep your vehicle locked. Even in small towns like Fernie, said Cpl. Dan Hay, Elk Valley RCMP.
