File # 2021-11875
On November 9th, 2021 at approximately 11:45 am, Port Alberni RCMP attended Save-On Foods parking lot to investigate a report that a pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle there. Port Alberni Fire Department was on scene providing medical assessment of the pedestrian and immediate treatment for his minor injuries when the investigator arrived. The pedestrian was transported to hospital for further assessment. The driver remained on scene and cooperated with the investigation, witnesses provided their observations as well.
The parking lot was busy and it was raining heavily at the time, which is believed to have contributed to the incident. A Violation Ticket for a Motor Vehicle Act offence was issued.
This incident underscores the importance of driver and pedestrian awareness of the increased risk of collision during darker days and reduced visibility due to weather. Parking lots are a higher risk location for collisions due to the increased density of vehicles and pedestrians. Drivers need to ensure their windows are clear and proceed cautiously, pedestrians need to be aware of vehicles moving near them, make eye contact with drivers before crossing their paths and ensure they are seen.
