Campbell River RCMP Weekly Update for September 1st, 2021

As of August 31st, 2021, the Campbell River RCMP had responded to 12,083 calls for service, marking an 8.2 % increase over the same period in 2020.

Campbell River RCMP are warning the public about a recent spike in catalytic converter thefts.

While a relatively new crime to Campbell River, catalytic converter theft has seen four of the precious items stolen from vehicles in four days.

So why the interest in a car's exhaust system? Catalytic converters can range in price from $400 to $3000 and the precious metals inside them like palladium can be of high value to metal dealers.

Recent video of a theft, showed would be thieves working as a pair, with a lookout and one man hopping quickly under a vehicle with a battery operated grinder. The catalytic converter was taken in under two minutes.

Protecting yourself from these kinds of thefts is a difficult proposition, said Cst Maury Tyre. There are however, some things people can do to reduce the risk of theft. Park in well lit areas, park in the range of video cameras, and you can etch your licence plate number on the item, which could help police ID a thief.

If you see someone at night walking around with tools or carrying a catalytic converter, police are asking that you call in at 250-286-6221 immediately.
