Fatal collision on Highway 93 near Numa Falls

On May 8, 2021 at approximately 12:00 PM, Columbia Valley RCMP and Emergency Services responded to a fatal collision on Highway 93 near Numa Falls in Kootenay National Park.

Upon arrival it was determined that an eastbound white Freightliner semi truck was attempting to pass a slower moving passenger vehicle when it collided head-on with a westbound silver Honda Odyssey minivan. The driver of the minivan, a 65-year old man from New Brunswick, died at the scene. Three female passengers in the minivan, all from New Brunswick and ranging in age from 12-years old to 58-years old, sustained varying degrees of injury requiring medical treatment at hospital. At this time, the injuries, although serious, are not believed to be life-threatening. Neither occupant of the semi truck was injured.

The driver of the vehicle being passed by the semi truck did not remain at the scene. That vehicle is described as a light coloured SUV with a cargo box on the roof. Police are urging the driver of the vehicle being passed by the semi truck to contact investigators in Cranbrook at 250-420-4244.

Highway 93 was closed for a time as police investigated. BC RCMP Traffic Services in Cranbrook is leading the investigation and seeking witnesses to this collision.

Anyone who was traveling on Highway 93 in the vicinity of Numa Falls around the noon hour on Saturday, May 8, 2021 who witnessed this collision or the events leading up to it, including any dashboard camera video is asked to call BC RCMP Traffic Services in Cranbrook at 250-420-4244.
