Proactive patrols of the Chappell Creek snowmobiling area

2021-02-02 13:35 PST

On Thursday, January 28, 2021 Constable Robert Riemer of the Valemount RCMP joined forces with the Valemount and Area Recreation Development Association (VARDA) General Manager, Curtis Pawliuk, in order to conduct proactive patrols of the Chappell Creek snowmobiling area. Avalanche conditions were checked in multiple sections as well.

Chappell Creek, one of the regions most prized snowmobiling areas, is also a Caribou sensitive area, surrounded by multiple Caribou closures and boundaries.

Patrols were made throughout and around the Chappell Creek region, checking all areas designated as a Caribou closure, to ensure compliance from all those that use the region. It was encouraging to see that most regions were being respected, with very few tracks (old or new) breaching the marked boundaries.

It is required by law to abide by these boundaries and closures. Failure to do so could result in a $575.00 fine under Section 7(1) of the British Columbia Wildlife Act.

The Valemount RCMP would like to thank Curtis Pawliuk for his time in assisting local police in conducting guided patrols, and for his assistance in ensuring that all Caribou regions are adhered to and respected.

Together lets respect these closures to ensure the continued use and enjoyment of some of the best riding terrain this province has to offer.
