The Merritt RCMP have seen an increase in phone scams to Merritt residents over the past few weeks.

Scammers are pretending to be the police and are soliciting funds from their victims, saying their loved ones are in jail and need bail money to be released. Recently a couple was scammed out $30,000. Most phone scammers are from out of Country, which can make retrieving any money sent very difficult, if not impossible.

We will never call you and ask for money, says Sgt. Josh Roda of the Merritt RCMP. We are encouraging residents to be vigilant and not provide personal banking information over the phone.

If you are the victim of a phone scam please call the Merritt RCMP at 250-378-4262.
