File # 2021-5259

RCMP in North Cowichan Duncan and the BC Coroners Service are investigating following a child's death at a Duncan motel last night.

Just after 9 p.m. on April 9, 2021, front line officers from the North Cowichan Duncan RCMP and BC Emergency Health Services (EHS) were called to a local area motel for a report of an unresponsive child.

First responders attempted life-saving efforts and the child was transported to a local area hospital. Despite resuscitation attempts, the 6-year-old child could not be saved and was pronounced dead at the hospital. RCMP will not be identifying the child.

The North Cowichan Duncan General Investigation Section has assumed conduct of the investigation, with support from the Forensic Identification Section and front line officers. Officers remain at the scene today and are expected to remain in the area into tomorrow.

The BC Coroners Service is conducting it's own investigation into the circumstances around the child's death.

"The North Cowichan Duncan Victim Services is engaged and are supporting the family during this difficult time," states S/Sgt, Janelle Shoihet of the BC RCMP.

No further information is available.
