Fernie Snowmobiling Club, Fernie, BC
Late February, person(s) damaged the kiosk at the snowmobiling club at the Coal Creek staging area. The frame building was built by the club and volunteers. The damage was made by someone presumably attaching a tow cable to the C-can storage unit inside the building and pulling it with a vehicle.

COVID-19 and Provincial Health Order Offences

On February 16, 2021, Elk Valley RCMP received a report of approximately nine people hanging out on a deck having a party in Sparwood, BC. Due to the loud noise, Police attended and learned that there was breach under the Quarantine Act (QUA) conventions. The homeowner received a violation ticket in the amount of $230.00 under Section 4(3), Promote Non Compliant Event, of the QUA.
On March 06, 2021, Elk Valley RCMP received information from a Provincial Health Nurse that an individual had failed to quarantine when he crossed into Canada from the United States. The individual refused to complete the mandatory COVID-19 test prior to crossing the border. For failing to obey the Quarantine Act, the individual was issued a fine in the amount of approximately $3,400.00.

On March 14, 2021, the owner/manager a local pub establishment in Fernie, BC. Received a fine in the $2, 300.00 under Section 3(1), Contravention of Food and Liquor Premises Order, of the Emergency Program Act ( EPA). Elk Valley RCMP were in attendance at the pub to ensure compliance under the EPA; however quickly discovered that most tables had more than 7 persons; some but not all persons were wearing masks; and the back deck was over flowing with patrons.

Theft of Tools at Construction Site – Fernie, BC

On March 17, 2021, Elk Valley RCMP learned that at the construction site between Tom Uphill Manor and Isabella Dicken Elementary School, the locks on the tool trailer were cut and numerous items were stolen. The approximate value of the tools, marked
Kimberley Electric range from $1,500 to $2,000.

Old Fire Grenade turns out to be an old style fire extinguisher-Elkford, BC.

On March 21, 2021, Elk Valley RCMP responded to a very unique call for service. A family had come across what first appeared to be an old fire grenade with either carbon tetrachloride or salt water in it. The object was essentially a balloon shaped glass bottle with liquid. The understanding was that it was thrown at the base of the fire where it would act as an extinguisher. RCMP contacted the Explosives Disposal Unit (EDU) and after viewing pictures, determined the object to be safe. The owners of the older style of fire extinguisher was educated on its safe ‘antique’ handling.
Youths Start Small Brush Fire – Sparwood, BC

On March 22, 2021, Sparwood Fire Department requested the assistance of the Elk Valley RCMP to speak to a group of youths that had accidently started the small brush fire, with a lighter, near Matevic Road and Highway 43. The fire was quickly extinguished by the Fire Department. No one was injured and there was no property damage at the scene. The parents of the youth were contacted by the Police.
Elk Valley Man arrested for possessing child pornography
An Elk Valley man was arrested for possessing child pornography after the Elk Valley detachment was advised by the RCMP’s Integrated Child Exploitation unit of the circumstances. Police had executed a search warrant and seized a number of computers for further examination. The man was released on strict conditions and future court date. His name will not be released at this time as criminal charges have yet to be laid.
Impaired Driver to Appear in Court – Fernie, BC

On February 28, police received reports of a vehicle colliding with parked cars on Park Avenue in Fernie. Upon further investigation police determined the female driver was impaired by liquor and demanded a sample of her breath. The driver did not comply with the demand. Criminal charges of refusing to provide a breath sample will be recommend to Crown Counsel. The driver was released on an Appearance Notice for a future court date in Fernie.
