
Fatal motor vehicle incident

The North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP frontline officers attended a single-vehicle motor vehicle incident on Gibbons Road just before 10:00 PM on January 31, 2021. When police arrived on scene, hospital staff were attending to the two occupants.
The driver was declared deceased on scene and the passenger was treated at nearby hospital for non-life threatening injuries. The police will not be releasing any further information on the deceased or passenger.
There was a dog in the vehicle during the incident who has since been located and is back with her owner.
Along with the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP, the North Cowichan – South End Fire Department, RCMP Collision analyst, Forensic Identification Services, Police Dog Services and BC Coroner’s Service all attended the scene to assist. The cause of the incident is still under investigation. There is no indication at this time that alcohol was a factor but speed has not been ruled out.
