
One person confirmed dead in New Year’s Eve fire

One person is confirmed to have died in the residential building fire that occurred in Duncan on New Years Eve (Link to original news release).
S/Sgt. Kurt Bosnell of the Duncan RCMP states, The North Cowichan Duncan RCMP is working closely with our partners at the North Cowichan Fire Department and the BC Coroners Service. At this point we have not been able to determine the source of the fire and whether or not it is suspicious until those determinations are made, the RCMP will remain engaged.
One resident has died in the fire, RCMP has notified the BC Coroners Service who is conducting its own investigation to determine all the facts around the person’s death. Neither police or the BC
Coroners Service will be identifying the deceased.
While the cause of the fire has yet to be confirmed, at this point there is no indication of any illegal drugs/activity that may have been the cause of the blaze, that is believed to have started on the fourth floor.
The scene remains inaccessible as the investigation continues.
