BC RCMP notify the IIO BC of an incident in Port Alberni

The BC RCMP has notified the Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO BC) of an incident in Port Alberni that resulted in one man’s death.

On December 23, at approximately 6:38 p.m. front line officers from the Port Alberni RCMP were called to a report of a man on the roof of a residential building in the 4200-block of Morton Street in Port Alberni.

When officers arrived they located the man in possession of a weapon. The man injured himself with the weapon and collapsed. Officers provided first aid until ambulance could arrive.

BC Emergency Health Services transported the man to a local area hospital for treatment, however he died shortly after arrival.

IIO BC is investigating to determine whether police actions are linked to the man’s death. As the matter is now under investigation by the IIO BC, no further information will be released by police.
