Increase in intersection enforcement

Williams Lake, Quesnel, Hundred Mile House

2022-12-06 10:36 PST

On Tuesday November 22 and Wednesday November 23, 2022, members of the BC Highway Patrol from 100 Mile House and Williams Lake conducted intersection enforcement at Highway 97 and First Street as well as Highway 97 and Exeter Station Rd in 100 Mile House.

In a short period of time members observed multiple passenger and commercial vehicles failing to slow or stop for yellow and red lights at each intersection. Weather conditions during the enforcement deteriorated quickly with obvious snow and slush build up, increasing stopping distances.

The officers conducted traffic stops, and the offending drivers were issued tickets for various offences. A total of 15 tickets were issued for red light, yellow light and distracted driving offences over the two-day period.

Intersections are traditionally high collision areas, and this time of year those incidents can increase with poor and slippery roads coupled with inattentive drivers, stated Sgt Jason Nash of the Williams Lake BC Highway Patrol unit.  The consequence for not stopping at a yellow or red light is $167.00 and 2 demerit points.

BC Highway Patrol would like to remind motorists to adjust speed to the road and weather conditions and give yourself time and distance to safely stop at all intersections.

BC Highway Patrol will continue enhanced enforcement initiatives spontaneously throughout the region in the months ahead.
