Collisions, excessive speeding and impaired driving kept officers busy

Weather-related collisions, excessive speeding and impaired driving kept officers busy yesterday (November 29th).

Officers attended 3 single-vehicle collisions yesterday morning, all within the span of half an hour between 8:30 – 9:00 a.m., due to the slippery road conditions caused by the snowfall. All drivers reported losing control of their vehicles and required tow trucks as the damage to their vehicles rendered them inoperable. The drivers were lucky however and did not sustain any injuries.

At approximately 11:45 a.m. officers received multiple reports of a male passed out in the driver’s seat of a 2018 white BMW 330I that was parked on the front lawn of a residence near the 800 block of Sunridge Valley Dr in Colwoood. The vehicle does not appear to be related to the residence in anyway. The driver displayed signs of alcohol intoxication and was arrested for impaired driving. Upon arrest, they were also found to be in possession of drugs (suspected to be Cocaine). This investigation is ongoing, the vehicle was impounded for 30-days and the driver was issued a 90-day Immediate Roadside Prohibition. Police are still investigating the driver for being in Possession of a Controlled Substance.

Later in the day at approximately 2:10 p.m., an officer on patrol was making a left turn from Sooke Rd onto Veteran’s Memorial Parkway, when a 2022 white Toyota Highlander was making the same turn and accelerated at a high rate of speed once on VMP. The officer pulled over the Highlander that was estimated to be speeding in excess of 120 km/hr. The driver, who is identified as an 18-year-old male was charged under the Motor vehicle Act for excessive speeding, a fine of $483 and 3 points. The vehicle was also impounded for 7 days.

This is just a snapshot of the busy day officers had. Traffic enforcement is a priority for us here at the West Shore. Safer roads lead to safer communities. With the holiday season upon us you will see our officers patrolling and setting up check stops looking for impaired drivers, said Inspector Stephen Rose, Officer in charge of West Shore RCMP Operations.
