It’s been a busy summer for West Shore RCMP

The West Shore RCMP has had a busy summer. In August 2020 the detachment received 2175 calls for service.
Below is a chart depicting the various categories for calls for service reported in August 2020. Please note the chart does not confirm the number of offences that have occurred, but rather how the calls were initially reported.
“In the summer months we typically see an increase in calls for service compared to the rest of the year. This can be due to more visitors and tourists coming through the West Shore. What’s significant about 2020 has been the increase in calls for service when it comes to mental health and checking the well being of a person (not mental health related). In August 2019, the West Shore RCMP received 84 calls for service relating to mental health, in August 2020 that number jumped to 134 calls for service. We saw this pattern again regarding well being checks; August 2019 there were 53 calls for service relating to well being checks vs 93 in August 2020", said Cst. Nancy Saggar, West Shore RCMP Media Relations Officer.
If you, or someone you know, is experiencing a mental health crisis, you can always call 911 to reach your local police. You can also call the Crisis Centre BC at 604-872-3311, or visit their online site crisiscentre.bc.ca/.
