April is Auto Crime Enforcement Month and Surrey RCMP is encouraging vehicle owners to be Car Smart by taking the right steps to protect themselves and their vehicles from falling victim to crimes of opportunity.

In 2021, Surrey RCMP received 5,347 reports of thefts from vehicles and 1,303 reports of stolen vehicles. Overall, auto crime numbers were down in 2021, but theft from vehicles remain one of our highest reported property crime types.

Being a victim of auto crime is inconvenient and upsetting. Taking a few additional steps can help decrease your chances being the victim of this opportunistic crime. Surrey RCMP recommends that you incorporate the following precautions into your daily routine:

Taking action to prevent auto crime makes our communities and roads safer for everyone, says, Surrey RCMP Media Relations Officer, Cst. Gurvinder Ghag. Stolen vehicles are often used to facilitate additional criminal offences which is why it is important make a police report immediately if your vehicle is taken.

If your vehicle has been stolen or broken into call Surrey RCMP non-emergency at 604-599-0502 to make a report. If you witness a theft in progress, stay back and call 9-1-1.
