With the new school year set to begin, parents, guardians, and teachers have been preparing school supplies, and lesson plans. Surrey RCMP would also like to encourage members of our community to review their back-to-school road safety awareness.
The start of the school year is a perfect time to review and practice pedestrian road safety strategies for the entire family. If you walk to school, cross at designated crosswalks, ensure traffic has stopped, and that drivers can see you when you are crossing the street. Consider adding bright colours to your back-to-school wardrobe for better pedestrian visibility.
Drivers, don’t forget that school zones are also back in effect. Speed in school zones is 30 km/hr. unless otherwise posted. These slower speeds helps keep students, teachers, and school visitors safe, by increasing the driver’s reaction time. Many schools also have other traffic considerations, such as one-way student drop-off loops, and turning restrictions. Familiarizing yourself with the traffic pattern around your school and planning your route will help eliminate some of the stress of dropping off the kids.
The Surrey RCMP Traffic Unit and School Resource Officers will be on-hand to help ensure a safe start to the new school year through education and enforcement of the BC Motor Vehicle Act.
Surrey RCMP will also be hosting a webinar on ‘Back to School Safety’, September 22, 2021, at 6 pm. This on-line event will be presented by the Surrey RCMP Youth Unit, Youth Intervention Programs and the Family & Youth Resource Support Team. Please register in advance for this webinar.
Best wishes for a safe and successful 2021/2022 school year from everyone at Surrey RCMP!
