Maple Ridge, B.C. – The Crime Severity Index for both Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows is in decline for a second straight year.
On August 2nd, Statistics Canada released their most recent Crime Severity Index (CSI) results. The CSI is a weighted measure of crime which considers police reported incidents and victim reported incidents. It also utilizes variables such as population size and the severity in nature of crimes reported. Essentially, if a crime is very serious in nature (assault, robbery, homicide, gun violence, etc) the CSI will be higher where less serious crime (criminal mischief, theft under $5000, etc) will have a lesser affect.
The CSI result for the last three reported years are;
Maple Ridge
- 2019 – 108.78
- 2020 – 91.69
- 2021 – 81.74
Pitt Meadows
- 2019 – 78.91
- 2020 – 59.72
- 2021 – 53.03
Inspector Jayson Lucash states, Intelligence generated by members and collated by our Crime Analysts is ensuring police are rapidly deploying officers to areas where crime is occurring. Proactive initiatives such as Project Core and Project Blitz, our community bike patrols, the creation of a curfew check program and our new Mental Health Team have collaboratively contributed to this downward crime trend as reflected in our CSI numbers. However, we cannot rest. Ridge Meadows detachment will continue to seek and implement innovative strategies which make the communities of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows safer.
