You are invited - Strength and Remembrance Pole raising
2019-10-23 11:10 PDT
It is our privilege, on behalf of the North Shore Violence Against Women in Relationships (VAWIR) Committee, to invite media and the public to join the RCMP as we recognize the Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women and Girls in anticipation of honouring the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.
In consultation with local elders, the VAWIR Committee will be raising a Strength and Remembrance Pole in North Vancouver. The carved red cedar pole stands in remembrance of the Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women and Girls across Canada, the fourteen women murdered in the Montreal Massacre, and all women who suffer violence.
This Remembrance Pole will serve as a spiritual beacon for these victims, said Michelle Dodds, Chair of the North Shore VAWIR Committee.
But this will also be a place where their family members and friends can come for strength as they remember their beloved, and a place where all people can gather to reflect on these tragedies, so that we never forget them.
The North Shore VAWIR Committee is comprised of local criminal justice and community-based service providers who are dedicated to continuing to change our local response to and attitudes toward violence against women.
