The public can now get a brightly-coloured sticker from Mission RCMP, to put onto their car or home, which provides a notification that someone in the car or home may be non-speaking, or may have heightened anxiety. The initiative is intended to help police officers proactively identify when they may be interacting with a person who has Autism or is Neurodiverse, so that the officer can tailor the way they communicate with that person, and can also better understand the behaviour they are displaying. In a dynamic situation where officers need to act quickly, getting key information about the person they are interacting with can make all the difference in helping to keep everyone safe, and ensuring that a person with Autism or Neurodiversity is respected and their needs are supported.
Anyone wanting to get a sticker is welcome to come by the Mission RCMP detachment, 7171 Oliver Street.
