Early-morning campaign boosts pedestrian safety

Mission, Community Policing Services

Last week, Mission RCMP teamed up with partners from CP Police, ICBC, the Mission Crime Prevention Office, BC Transit and others, to help promote pedestrian safety in downtown Mission.

Officers and volunteers assembled outside the West Coast Express Station starting at 5 am, to coincide with the first commuter train of the morning. Volunteers met with pedestrians to remind them about the importance of being visible during the darker fall and winter months. Meanwhile, officers from Mission RCMP’s Traffic Services unit conducted speed enforcement nearby, where the stretch of North Railway Avenue near the West Coast Express station is 40 km/hr. The pedestrians received reflective safety tags to remind them of the importance of being seen, whereas drivers who were going too fast also received reminders, however those were not reflective.

Drivers can expect to see Mission RCMP conducting further early-morning pedestrian-safety initiatives in various locations around Mission.
