Every year throughout the summer season, Mission RCMP conduct extra patrols to help support the additional use of the Forest Service Roads (FSRs) and wilderness areas in the region. Mission RCMP are also grateful for the additional financial support provided by BC Hydro, which helped additional resources to be dedicated to the popular recreation areas at Hayward Lake and Stave Lake, which are managed by BC Hydro. Mission RCMP’s enhanced seasonal policing included:
- Patrols of the main FSRs and backcountry camping areas by pickup truck
- Checks of secondary FSRs and off-road areas by ATVs or our side-by-side
- Marine enforcement aboard the police boat on Stave Lake
- Bike and foot patrols of the downtown core
The primary goal of these patrols is always education and deterrence, says Corporal Harrison Mohr with Mission RCMP.
Of course if we locate an impaired driver or someone committing clearly illegal activity, we will take appropriate action, but we would rather just be around to ensure everyone is being safe and having fun while in the backcountry.
Although not as many resources are dedicated to some of these areas throughout the rest of the year, Mission RCMP still do conduct occasional patrols year-round. The police boat and off-road vehicles are also at-the-ready all year long, so they are ready to deploy if needed to respond for enforcement or to assist in a backcountry rescue.
Thanks to everyone who did their part to make this summer a success in all of the amazing wilderness areas around Mission!
