Welcome to the Mission RCMP Community Connection for the week of August 7 – 13, 2023

Here’s a snapshot of some of the work we did last week:

Calls of interest:

On August 10, shortly after 2 am, police were notified of a break and enter in-progress at a building on Harrison Bay Road in the Lake Errock area. Several persons associated to a UHaul truck had broken through a fence, entered a commercial building, and took numerous items from within. RCMP from both Mission and Agassiz detachments responded, but the intruders had since left. The investigation is ongoing, and anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area at the time is asked to call Mission RCMP.

On the afternoon of August 10, one of Mission RCMP’s eagle-eyed Traffic Services officers recognized a blue Dodge Dakota leaving the parking lot of a liquor store as a truck associated to a driver whom had previously been sanctioned for impaired driving. The officer stopped the vehicle, noted an open can of beer in the center-console, and administered a roadside screening device test. The 68-year-old male driver from Mission blew a Warn reading, and received a 7-day driving prohibition and a vehicle impound.

Several motorcycles and a boat have been stolen recently in the Mission area. On August 1, a blue 2022 Yamaha 230 dirt bike was stolen out of the back of pickup truck on Sylvester Road in Hatzic. Between August 6-13, three dirt bikes were stolen from a property on Spratt Road in Hatzic: a blue 1995 Yamaha, a red 1983 Honda, and a 2021 Coleman minibike. And on August 11, a blue and grey Seadoo pontoon boat and trailer were stolen from Cherry Ave. CCTV showed a newer red Ford F-150 backing up and taking the unit around 6 am. Owners of all powersports vehicles are encouraged to ensure their property is secured, to write down the VIN or serial numbers, and to take photographs, to assist in locating and recovering their property if it does get stolen.

A hit-and-run occurred on Highway 11 at the London Avenue on-ramp on August 12 at 2:30 pm. A grey Acura TSX rear-ended another vehicle, then fled the scene. Fortunately, a witness was able to note the license-plate number of the suspect vehicle, which helped police in Abbotsford locate it a short-time later. The driver failed a roadside screening device test, and was issued a 90-day driving prohibition, a 30-day vehicle impound, and a ticket for failing to remain at the scene of a collision.

On the evening of August 9, a woman came to the Mission detachment with a small dog that she had found wandering in a parking lot a few blocks away. Not knowing what to do with it, the woman asked the RCMP for help. Now, the RCMP does not usually take in stray animals – instead recommending that people contact the SPCA or Fraser Valley Regional District Animal Control – however, the officer in this case saw that the little Yorkie was clearly scared and needed to be reunited with its owner as soon as possible, so the officer agreed to help, and took in the dog. And fortunately, no sooner had the officer given the dog some water, a bowl of fresh kibble, and a good head-scratching, did the owner come to the detachment wanting to report he had lost his dog nearby. The little dog was so happy to see its owner that it jumped right up into his arms (quite a feat for a small Yorkie!), and both left overjoyed to be back together again.
