New Scam : Take note!
It has come to attention of the Mission RCMP and Mission CPO that scammers are targeting gift cards this holiday season, generating at least one Mission RCMP investigative file. There are two scams that are currently occurring:
- Scammers and taking photographs of bar codes from various different gift cards at stores, and then using those bar codes through a self-checkout system at other shopping centers
- Scammers are placing their own bar codes overtop existing barcodes on gift cards and then testing their luck at having funds placed on their particular barcode, if and when those gift cards are purchased
We are reaching out to our business community and recommending that all gift cards be double checked, and perhaps placed in a secure place where they cannot be accessed by individuals until they need to make their purchase. Stay Safe Mission!
