File # 2020 - Distracted

Langley Traffic Services spent five hours of March 3rd focussing their attention on distracted drivers in observance of Provincial Distracted Driving Enforcement Day.

The team conducted two separate operations – Highway 10 at Glover Road and 64 Avenue at 200 Street. The first included an undercover officer on foot and the second officer was on a bicycle. During the five hour window, 27 violation tickets were issued to Distracted Drivers. Just over $15K in fines and penalties….

Fortunately, none of the violations were issued as the result of a collision but the potential for disaster was very real. Roughly one in four fatal crashes on BC roads involves driver distraction.

If you are caught distracted driving, you’ll be ticketed and receive a fine of $368. You will also add four driver penalty points to your driving record. If you have four or more points at the end of a 12-month period you then pay a driver penalty point premium. These premiums start at $252 and increase for every point you accumulate. There is also a possibility you will have to pay an additional driver risk premium.
